Generally as I write for the website, except for the occasional word of thanks or encouragement, I try to keep my personal opinions and feelings out of the articles, but today I can’t help but editorialize a little. First let me tell you a few things about your board and staff; in short never have I worked with a finer bunch of people and I have worked with some of the best and the worst, in church groups, civic groups, with employers and employees and yes, in groups run by mental health consumers (I don’t really like that term, but I don’t know a better one).
I have seen groups that couldn’t seem to get along or agree on anything and where the littlest difficulty degenerated into arguing, blaming, finger pointing and worse. It seems that hard times either brings out the worst or the best in people and let me assure you that the difficulties of this past year have brought out the best in your Board of Directors and Staff. They were excellent before, but they are even better now. They are not perfect, to be sure. I have heard the occasional grumble or complaint, but for the most part I have seen them pull together with even greater conviction, resolve and cooperation. They looked at the harsh realities of the situation, faced them head on and moved forward with a positive and determined attitude. They have embodied the spirit of recovery, taken responsibility for themselves, used all their creative resources and abilities, asked for help when they needed it, been assertive without being angry or aggressive, been considerate of others, and yes, even had fun at times.
I do not know what the future holds, but I do know that if we face it with the courage, determination and positive attitude displayed by this group then it is a bright future indeed, both for us as individuals and collectively as we daily struggle with the harsh realities of living with mental illness. Funding may all dry up tomorrow, but if we maintain that spirit of recovery and hope and the willingness to work together and help one another then I believe that the best is yet to come!
