MEET OUR 2014 RECIPIENTS »

We asked you to nominate a nonprofit in your area that’s making a difference for people and the planet and we’re delighted at the response!

After reviewing the nominations, our judges have chosen recipients for $10,000 in Tom’s of Maine sponsorship funding in every state and the District of Columbia. Special thanks to everyone behind the nominations and the nonprofits for creating positive change in communities coast-to-coast.

A little ingenuity can bring lasting, positive change to a community and our 2014 50 States for Good recipients demonstrate how the kernel of an idea can become something everyone is talking about. In November 2014, we awarded one 501c (3) nonprofit organization in every state and the District of Columbia with a combined total of more than $500,000 in project funding. And you helped to choose them! Thanks for your nominations! Each organization will make a difference in their community thanks to your support. Read about them below.

The Kansas CAC is a non-profit organization that educates, advocates, and collaborates with community partners on behalf of those with having a lived experience of having a mental illness, and finding success and recovery in their lives.  The CAC was founded in June, 2000, and is recognized by the State of Kansas and SAMHSA as the Statewide Adult Mental Health Consumer Network in Kansas.  Board of Directors, Staff, and Members are persons with a lived experience of having a mental illness.

The CAC works closely with the Consumer Run Organizations (CROs) in Kansas, Wichita State University, University of Kansas, Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services (KDADS), the Governor’s Behavioral Health Services Planning Council (GBHSPC), SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration), international partners in Australia, Japan, and the Netherlands, and numerous other agencies and advocacy groups in Kansas and across the US.

The program that the CAC was nominated for that touches lives of many consumers across the state of Kansas is the annual Recovery Conference that the CAC hosts/sponsors each year.  This annual conference has touched the lives of over 1,000 Kansas Adults over the years, and has greatly impacted lives, and helping to make informed choices on Recovery with living with a Mental Illness.  The award money will be used to impact participants who attend the 2015 Recovery Conference in June.

Other programs of the CAC include:  Trauma Informed Care Curriculum (“So You Want to Change the World?”, Leadership in Action Academy, Leadership for Empowerment Academy, “Get Healthy, KS!”, and others.
